Art might not always be in the places you expect. You’ll find these 10 new photographic works scattered across the townships, each exploring important and engaging themes around mental health. Where they are, we cannot say—but we’ll leave you with a new clue each day.

In Plain Sight is a body of work created by students from the Stars Foundation + headspace Pilbara. This second stage development of a Phoneography program by headspace Pilbara has seen the girls use mobile phones to explore themes of connection, movement, gratitude, and stress.

A powerful creative outlet for expressing emotions, the resulting images depict the multifaceted perspectives of mental health through the lens of young people. And it’s up to you to find them.

Michael Jalaru Torres captures his culture using the tools of the camera and pen. His photography strips away the noise and focuses on the subject, creating minimalist artworks of light and shadow over skin and landscape, illuminating the dark history of Australia to modern day themes that shape our remote and urban communities.

These tales share a poetic narrative that plants a seed, allowing the viewer to engage and connect to the image in their own way. SCARIII encourages the viewer to seek out more truth of the stories, allowing the storytelling to evolve organically, while encouraging people to feel a greater connection to country.

We’re proud to introduce Tania Daymond as the 2021 Red Earth Arts Festival’s Artist in Residence. Tania creates powerful botanical art that captures the evocative essence of the Western Australian bush..

Tania’s bright, bold work is striking in its complexity. Handdrawn on archival paper with a fountain pen, traditional inks and watercolour finishes; the juxtaposition of a familiar West Australian colour pallette against bold blacks re-imagines how our native flowers are seen. Tania will explore the Pilbara; and take inspiration from the local flora, and document what we enjoy right here on our doorstep. You can find some of Tania’s previous work exhibited on festival days at Cossack. Otherwise, come and visit her during her Residency.
