Sailing with Styx brings Bad Feminist – the sassy romantic comedy with a political twist, to Karratha for the phenomenal Red Earth Arts Festival. It’s feminist rom-com meets Schrodinger’s cat – and after a sold out debut at The Blue Room Theatre, it’s on its way up North.
In this chick flick brought to stage, Audrey learns what it takes to be a feminist when you don’t have all the facts. Audrey just got some, like, kinda bummer news about her perfect boyfriend. He might have done something really bad. Might have. Now everything is true and not true all at once. Audrey’s mind spins into her own personal Groundhog Day of every decision she could possibly make as she balances a terrifying personal and moral dilemma of cinematic proportions.
Directed by Holland Brooks (Gal Pals, No Autonomy Under Anatomy), the production is led by powerhouse emerging performers Clea Purkis (Everything Flickers), Harrison Lorenz-Daniel (Ghosts), Harper Nguyen (The Book of Salt) and Abi Russell (No Autonomy Under Anatomy). Russell and Brooks make their play-writing debut with this hysterically funny, totally unafraid interrogation of fourth wave feminism and rape culture.
Bad Feminist brings humour and levity to a topic that can often seem dark and untouchable- the role of the bystander in perpetuating sexual assault culture. It’s a that culture touches everyone, and it’s time we talk about it- like the good feminists we think we are.
